Capture the Hill |
Find a good hill with lots of things to hide behind or tall grass to hide in. (best played in the dark) Give one person a flashlight and tell them to stand at the top of the hill. The rest of the group starts at the bottom of the hill. When word if given to "go" the group slowly moves up the hill, crawling and sneeking behind things. The person at the top shines the flashlight around, when they find someone they have to call out their name. If it is right, they are captured and have to sit out. If it is wrong, they have to move on and keep looking. Object: Try to get to the top of the hill without being spotted. (you can use a flag for capturing if you want) First one to "Capture the Hill" is now "it". |
Horseshoe Miniture Golf |

Find places to put your horse shoes, such as up a hill, next to a tree, or around the campsite. 2.) Make obstacles such as rocks, chairs, etc. 3.) Have fun trying to get the golf balls into the horse shoes! |

Montana Ghost Towns |
For a trip back in time and a great history lesson check out our Top 10 Rated Ghost Towns |
1. Bannack |
Located just outside Dillon, this is by far my favorite. It was established in 1864 as a gold mining town. It was named the first Territorial Capital of Montana. Be sure to stop at the office when you first arrive. For a few dollars they will give you a book on the history and maps and stories of each building. One story tells about a gun fight in the saloon! On the wall in the office are strange pictures and stories of ghosts seen in the town. One picture on the wall shows a ghost in the school room. Behind the person in the picture the ghost seems to be writing on the chalk board! You have to see it to believe it! Bring your camera and see if you can catch any ghosts! |
2. Virginia City |
Virginia City is a very well known historical town. It is a big tourist attraction with the main strip of the town made into shops and busnesses. It is definately a place to stop. Check out the website, there are lots of pictures and stories. They have old fashion events year round! |
3. Nevada City |
From Nevada City you can ride the train into Virgina City. Most of the buildings are gone but you can see a lot of the original town is still visible from the road. |
4. Elk Horn |
This one is beautiful with lots of cabins. Be careful here, most of the town is privately owned. There are two main buildings that are owned by the Forest Service and you can stop at those. Just above the town is the grave yard showing the hardships of the times. Further up the mountain road is a little lake called Leslie Lake. Once at the trail head it is about 1/4 mile hike. This is a rough road and you will need 4 wheel drive to get up it but it is worth it. |
5. Garnet |
This one is really cool. It was established in 1862 as a gold mining town. One mine was said to have poured out $10,000,000 in gold! It was owned by two men. One man in a disagreement with his partner sold his share to his partner for $50, then later hung himself. The mine was in operation until 1954. |
6. Marysville |
Not far outside of Helena, MT this was one of the richest ghost towns producing around $50,000,000. In 1876 a vein was discovered by an Irishman who named the town after the first woman in the town. This ghost town is unique for it's baseball field!! |
7. Bearcreek |
Located just over the hill from historic Red Lodge, this town has a sad mining history. The mining disaster of 1943 left 74 men buried and only three men survived leaving 125 children without fathers! The saloon is still in use with the post office in the back. If you visit in the summer you can watch the pig races! |
8. Glendale |
Mainly a silver and lead mining town the buildings left behind are really cool. Check out the pictures and history at the site above. |
9. Glengary |
Located just minutes outside Cooke City this one is a favorite because of the spectacular views. Glengary mine was part of the New World Mining District. The whole area is filled with old cabins. The mine was closed up in the last few years. Pictures of the mine clean up can also be seen online. This is a great place to take the RV. It will take you all weekend to explore the roads, lakes, and cabins. You can camp at Soda Butte campground or rent a room/cabin in Cooke City. While you are there don't forget to check out Yellowstone Park! |
10. Pony |
Named after a man by the name of Tecumsa Smith. No one could remember his name and called him "Pony" because of his size. He was not quite 5'. Legend has it he was frustrated with the lack of gold in the area and threw his pick at the ground in a patch of strawberries. When he pulled out his pick there was gold on it, hence naming the "Strawberry Mine". |
